Every Thread Tells a Story
Give your tartan a story worthy of its legacy.
A tartan is more than a pattern of coloured threads. It can hold the story of a family, commemorate a marriage, celebrate a place, unite an organisation or represent a cause that matters deeply to its creators.
But those stories deserve to be preserved.
Great Scot's Bespoke Tartan Story & Provenance service transforms the inspiration behind your tartan into a beautifully written, lasting record, capturing the meaning, memories and intentions woven into its creation.
Whether your tartan celebrates generations of family history, marks the beginning of a marriage, honours a much-loved place or gives a charity a distinctive identity, we help you record its story for posterity.
What is included?
-
Your tartan's story: A professionally written narrative, prepared by our Tartan Specialist, based on the background and information you provide.
-
The meaning behind the colours and thread counts: An explanation of the symbolism, numerology and personal significance of your chosen colours and design elements.
-
A record of its inspiration: The people, places, events, values or memories that inspired the tartan.
-
A lasting document: A thoughtfully presented digital and physical document that you can keep, share with family and colleagues, or use to accompany your tartan.
-
A legacy for generations to come: A written account designed to help future generations understand why the tartan was created and what it represents.
Who is this service for?
Our Tartan Story & Provenance service is ideal for anyone who has already created, or is in the process of creating, a bespoke tartan and wants to ensure that the inspiration behind it is beautifully recorded.
It is particularly suited to:
-
Families and individuals who want to preserve the meaning and personal history behind a family tartan.
-
Couples who have commissioned a wedding or union tartan and want to record the story of two families coming together.
-
Businesses and organisations who want a lasting written record of the values, heritage and inspiration behind their corporate tartan.
-
Charities and causes who want to document the purpose and story behind a tartan created to support their work.
You do not need to have your tartan woven to commission this service. It can be prepared during the design process, ready to accompany your finished cloth when it arrives.
Your journey to a woven tartan
Creating your own tartan is a wonderfully rewarding journey. At Great Scot, we can take you through every stage, from your first idea to the finished woven cloth.
1. Discover. Start with your story.
Begin with a Bespoke Tartan Vision Consultation. Explore your inspiration, discuss your ambitions and discover the possibilities.
2. Design. Bring your vision to life.
Commission Great Scot to create your bespoke tartan design, translating your story, colours and ideas into an original design.
3. Prepare and Register. Give your tartan its official place in history.
Registration is an important milestone in giving a tartan its official place in the Scottish Register of Tartans.
At Great Scot, we take responsibility for ensuring that the design is properly prepared for application. This includes checking the technical specifications, colours, thread counts, sett details and accompanying narrative, ensuring that everything meets the Register's requirements before submission.
We are immensely proud of our 100% approval record for the tartans we have prepared and submitted.
4. Weave. Make it real.
Once your design is approved and the weaving arrangements are agreed, your tartan can be commissioned from a traditional British mill and brought to life in authentic woven wool.
5. Preserve. Record its legacy.
Commission your Tartan Story & Provenance document to record the inspiration, symbolism and significance of your creation for generations to come.
A legacy beyond the cloth
A beautifully woven tartan can last for generations. Its story should be able to do the same.
At Great Scot, we believe in the enduring power of authentic tartan and in supporting the traditional British mills and skilled craftspeople who bring it to life.
Our Tartan Story & Provenance service helps ensure that the inspiration behind your tartan is recorded with care, so its significance is not lost with the passing of time.
Your tartan has a story. Let us help you preserve it.
