MAKING MAGIC

When two remarkable Scottish women share a vision, one to preserve our textile heritage, the other to transform cancer care, something extraordinary happens.

Maggie's Tartan is born from a collaboration between Great Scot and Maggie's Cancer Care, honouring Dame Laura Lee's pioneering work creating spaces where people with cancer can find support, free of charge, across the UK.

Every thread in this tartan carries meaning. The carefully chosen colours represent different cancers, each shade a symbol of hope, resilience, and the unwavering support Maggie's centres provide to thousands of families every year.

This isn't just fabric. It's a legacy woven into Scotland's oldest craft, supporting both cancer care and the traditional skills of our Highland mills.

The Story of Maggie's Tartan Colours

Maggie's Tartan celebrates the full spectrum of cancer awareness, pinks, purples, greys, mauves, and every shade in between. Each thread represents a different cancer ribbon colour, woven together to create something inclusive and welcoming, just like Maggie's Centres themselves. This isn't just one shade of pink or purple; it's a tartan that honours every journey, every story, and every person touched by cancer. A design as diverse and compassionate as the community it supports.

Woven by Masters in Scotland's Historic Mills

For over 30 years, Great Scot has partnered exclusively with family-owned Scottish mills, some operating for generations, to preserve traditional weaving techniques.

We're the second-largest buyer of traditional woven tartans and tweeds in the UK, and every tartan we create undergoes rigorous quality control at every stage: dyeing, weaving, and finishing.

Maggie's Tartan will be woven using the same authentic methods our mill partners have perfected over centuries, ensuring historical accuracy and exceptional quality.

This isn't mass production. This is craftsmanship, heritage, and purpose woven together.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will Maggie's Tartan be available to purchase? We estimate 16 weeks from the start of weaving, though traditional production timelines can vary. Subscribers will be notified first when it's ready. Some non-woven products will be available just before Christmas and the woven, just after Christmas.

How long does traditional weaving take? Traditional tartan weaving is a careful process involving warping, weaving, and finishing. Each stage requires skill and precision, we never rush quality. We try to work with a 12-16 week schedule.

What products will be available? Kilts, scarves, children's clothing, and bespoke designs. We have been asked to add very affordable gifts too, so look out for mugs, buffs and t-shirts! We can create custom pieces for special occasions or corporate gifts.

How much goes to Maggie's Cancer Care? Maggie's receives 10% of profits from every sale, after production costs (yarn, dyeing, weaving, and finishing). Beyond this, we designed and registered their legacy tartan at no cost to them, we donate lots of products for their fundraising activities, all marketing costs are covered too- because awareness is one of the most valuable assets a charity can have, and match customer donations at checkout.

Can I design a custom tartan, too? Absolutely. We've created many charity, corporate and personal  tartans with 100% registration success. You can just design or go on to weave tartan too. Whatever you decide our team are exceptionally experienced and talented. The design process is collaborative and can take as little as one week, depending on your needs.

What makes Great Scot's tartans authentic? We work exclusively with family-owned Scottish mills that prioritise historical accuracy and traditional weaving methods. Every tartan we use is registered on the Scottish Register of Tartans and approved by the Lord Lyon. Our tartans are woven traditionally, not mass-produced, and undergo quality control at every stage.
