THE ANCIENTS

Ancient, Auld and Antique tartans feature earthy and muted colours, reflecting the natural dyes of ancient times. These colours included shades of brown, green, blue, and red but were generally softer and less vibrant than modern tartans. Browns came from oak bark, greens from plants like woad, blues from sources like indigo, and reds from the madder roots. These subdued hues created a more rustic and weathered appearance in ancient tartans.
