REGIMENTAL TARTANS

Over the last 300 years, tartans have been a part of official dress for some of the most famous regiments throughout the military world. Many of these regiments attained near legendary status through their feats of gallantry on the field of battle - and their respective regimental tartans became undisputedly tied to the very core identity of the soldiers who wear it.

Many of our wider Great Scot family have expressed an interest to learn about and purchase tartans as a tribute, for example to their Sutherland Highlander ancestor who fought as part of the 'Thin Red Line' at the Battle of Balaclava, during the Crimean War. Or maybe in honour of their Great-Grandfather who was with the Black Watch in the mud and horror of Passchendale in 1917.

But equally, regimental tartans also tell a story of Scotland's diaspora; of Scots' influence in the creation of the modern world - whether it be as part of the Wanganui Highland Rifles (Volunteers) in New Zealand, or in the mountains of southern Afghanistan with the Baluch Regiment, or in South Africa with the Cape Town Highlanders.

This collection is being added to all the time and we welcome comments and corrections wherever our knowledge of history needs some support.
