Why Add Registration & Yarn Samples?
Official Scottish Heritage
Your tartan becomes part of Scotland's official textile archive, permanently recorded and protected. We handle all registration details and have achieved 100% first-time approval for every tartan we've created.
See Before You Weave
Physical yarn samples let you feel the quality and confirm colours before committing to full production. This eliminates uncertainty and ensures your finished tartan matches your vision exactly.
Confidence for Production
With official registration complete and yarn samples approved, you can proceed to weaving, knowing every detail is perfect. No surprises, no compromises.
How It Works
1. Design Consultation Within 24 hours of your order, our design team contacts you to discuss your vision, heritage, values, and colour preferences. We create initial CAD designs showing how your tartan will look when worn.
2. Collaborative Refinement We work with you to perfect every detail—adjusting colours, proportions, and patterns until you're completely satisfied. Design can be completed in as little as one week, but we are led by your timing.
3. Official Registration Once approved, we register your tartan with the Scottish Register of Tartans. You receive official documentation confirming your tartan is now part of Scotland's heritage.
4. Yarn Samples Delivered We send physical yarn samples showing the exact colours and textures. These samples are essential for confirming quality before proceeding to full weaving. You can still change your mind at this point - it's important that you fall in love with the colours.
What Happens Next?
This service provides your complete design, registration, and yarn samples. It does not include woven tartan fabric.
Once you've approved your yarn samples, you can proceed to:
- Order woven tartan by the metre
- Commission bespoke products (kilts, scarves, blankets)
- Weaving the tartan from 13 mettres for whatever projects you wish.
We guide you through every stage, producing just one kilt or perhaps arranging global distribution for your finished products.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the complete process take? Design and registration typically take 1–2 weeks. Yarn sample delivery depends on your location but can arrive in as little as 7–14 days of registration completion.
What if I want to make changes after seeing the yarn samples? Yes, you can of course. We work hard to get you the shades that you seek. We help you understand how Pantone colours translate in yarn.
Can I use my registered tartan commercially? Yes. Once registered in your name, you own the rights to your tartan design and can use it for any purpose.
What's the difference between this and the design-only service? The design-only service provides a unique weavble design and CAD visualisations. This service adds official registration with the Scottish Register of Tartans plus physical yarn samples, preparing you for production.
